Flags

I've always known trust shouldn't be taken lightly

and I never have

getting me to trust you is like running a mile

the coach standing by is my subconscious

ticking off every red flag I don't notice

but I will

cause every night

like a drill

I lie awake overthinking

me and my subconscious

having conversations in a diner

our cups are never refilled but somehow we don't stop drinking

what's the tea?

well today the me across the table

nearly dropped her glass

nearly

cause a person we love and dared to trust dearly

showed us just why the emotion shouldn't be taken lightly

because only slightly

was it a surprise

somehow knew

after the first time

we knew those red flags

it was only a few

but that's what a pattern is right?

make a few rounds before it comes back

poised is the flag we always knew would return

but hoped it wouldn't

because our heart breaks every time

can't let ourselves be stupid again

take a flag or pattern for what it is

and reel that trust back in
