Five Kilometers of Truth

A lesson on boundaries, self-care, and the courage to say "I'll walk"

I hadn’t gone out for a brisk walk in two days. I didn’t feel like it. But that morning I felt something different — I really wanted to go. I dressed for jogging with that quiet sense of pride in choosing myself. My husband said we would go together, as usual. We set off. After a few steps, he told me to slow down. I asked why. He replied that he wasn’t dressed appropriately.

Only then did I realize — the plan was to drive to the store, five kilometers there and back. I had assumed we were walking. I didn’t ask. I didn’t check. We went back. We got into the car.

In that moment, I could have said: “You go by car, I’ll walk.” The idea crossed my mind while he was in the store. I could have walked home alone. It would have been perfect. Fresh air. Silence. The feeling that I fulfilled what I promised myself. But I said nothing.

At first glance — a trifle. But for me, it wasn’t. Because I realized something important: the problem wasn’t that we went by car. The problem was that I didn’t voice my desire. He didn’t stop me. I stopped myself — out of fear of hurting him, of seeming selfish. And the truth is simple: wanting to walk is not selfishness. It is self-care.

I realized that true strength is not shown in big dramas. It is shown in small sentences spoken on time. “I’ll walk.” It’s not rejection. It’s not rebellion. It is a healthy space between two people. Those five kilometers I didn’t walk are not a defeat. They are a lesson.

Next time I feel the desire, I will say it.

It might feel uncomfortable. But I will say it.

Because those five kilometers are not just walking.

It is a path towards choosing myself without guilt.
