The Last Time I Saw You

By Claude Rushia Published 4 years ago 1 min read

i never thought that i would have to see you in this way.

when i walked into the room, it broke my heart to see

you lying there covered in white, surrounded by so many

friends, family, and electrical devices.

they served a purpose to the staff

but they didn't help you, couldn't help you anymore.

i could smell antibacterial soap and sanitizer

it burned my nose and my brain

i will never forget it.

you were so thin, i was afraid that with each breath

you struggled to take, you wouldn't have the strength

to take another.

it was bittersweet to see you one last time

to have you look at me

recognize me

talk to me with your eyes

and give my heart what it needed

to hear you tell me you love me one more time

even as you struggled to breathe.

i know it took so much to fill your lungs

that strength and those words

i will forever cherish

until i take my last breath

close my eyes forever

and walk into your loving, and welcoming embrace.

i hold your words and memories in

my heart forever. i will never forget.
