Hot Pink
The plastic barrettes tangled in her hair
As she ran across the P.E. field,
We held hands and laughed
Against the wind.
Honey Beige
The ruffled pillow I clutched
As I sat near the edge of her couch,
My heart threatened to leave
My lips never stopped tingling.
Crimson
The Persian rug I sent daggers through
As I waited for Mom to respond,
She asked if it was a phase
So I turned and ran.
Midnight Purple
The bitter ink bleeding through pages
As the tears fell from my face,
My pen dug into the grooves
“I’m straight. I’m straight.”
Blue
My favorite kind of M&M.
Golden Brown
The waffle fries my first college bud stuffed in her mouth
As I stuttered out the truth,
She shrugged and asked
If I was going to finish my plate.
Hunter Green
The freckled leaves blurring past our window
As Dad drove us home,
My brain screamed to just
Say it out loud.
Amber
The stage lights slowly dimming
As I close out my first performance,
Hitting me then that who I love
Is my least interesting act.
Periwinkle
The wrapped flowers I’ll bring my parents
When I finally tell them the same,
They’ll ask me again
And this time I won’t run.
White
The easiest answer I’ll give
When anyone asks,
As if I could begin to explain
What every shade might mean.
Red
My second favorite kind of M&M.
