Favorite Candle

A Poem on Suicide & Depression

By Madeline PetersonPublished 8 years ago 1 min read

Blank canvas

on a white wall.

Blue raft

in deep blue sea.

The world

breathless and flat—

flower petals in

her childhood stockings.

Life became

that last bit

of her favorite candle—

unsure when to spark

for the final time.

When she lit it

she lit it

quick and late

at night

Flame shown bright

in the black air,

until

it drowned

in wax near dawn.

Blank canvas

unhung

Raft

a gift to the sea

The world

breathless and flat—

Her soul

set free.
