Fatal Distraction

A grave mistake

Driving, foot pressed hard against the pedal.

Impatient, never moving fast enough.

Strong vibrations, a screen illuminates the dashboard.

Take your eyes off the road, just for a second.

Reach for your phone, it must be important.

A glimpse of scattered light out the windshield, adrenaline surges.

Cut the wheel, slam the brakes, stop breathing.

Tires screeching, rubber burning, metal crunching.

Inertia hurls you forward, a violent burst of air shoves you backward.

Open your eyes as the dust, the smoke, the consequences all settle.

Never again.

Heavy subject matter, but all too true a scenario for some. Excellent poem.
