Fantasy Within a Fantasy

Thank goodness for fandoms!

“You don’t belong here,” they tell me with contempt

It’s a term I’ve often heard and well, I cannot disagree

I’ve searched across this planet

For a place to call my home

Yet, nothing seems to fit

I am always the wrong shape;

Like a circle when they want a square

Or a diamond when they want a cube

I do not envy them their lines

All even, straight and plain…

Boring, in my humble opinion

But it can be rather lonely to live here in the clouds

I sometimes wonder if they put me here

In this obvious exile

Just so they don’t have to see me, or hear my unique tune

I vibrate on a different frequency

And some just cannot handle it because it’s higher than their own

I love to dream of other worlds

While staring at the stars

For I think I’d feel more at home

Up there among the aliens in a foreign galaxy

Perhaps I am an alien

Stranded here on earth

The stars, oh they call to me so

And I know there would be no surprise if a UFO appeared

I’d simply stick out my thumb, a hitchhiker hailing a ride

“Where to?” the alien would ask

And I’d answer, “Anywhere!

Just get me the hell away from here!”

Often, the alien I picture is the Doctor in the TARDIS

Wishing the television show could become my reality

The Doctor makes you feel like someone

When you feel like you are no one

When you feel you drift through time and space unseen... unnoticed

“900 years of time and space and I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important,” the Doctor says with fierce sincerity

And you feel your shattered self-worth slowly begin to mend

Perhaps I’m just a geek

There’s no doubt this much is true

But can you really blame me for escaping the mundane?

For getting lost so deep within my technicolour fandoms?

It’s the only place I feel welcome

The only place where I belong

Where I can morph into my truest self

Alive and free outside reality

In a fantasy within a fantasy
