Fairytale Nonsense

A true story.

By Angel WhelanPublished 4 years ago Updated 4 years ago 1 min read
Our wedding day, July 8th 2005.

You can’t tell me that Mr. Right

Can be foreseen with just one sight.

I don’t believe a single glance

Is all it takes for true romance.

So just because I can recall

The way you looked across that hall,

And how the air between us stirred

Before you spoke a single word,

It doesn’t mean I knew right then

That there would be no other men.

Or that the way my heart beat fast,

Foretold of love destined to last.

So yes, I liked your curly hair,

And thought your style was debonair.

I don’t deny you caught my eye,

That’s no big shock, you’re one cute guy,

But whoever heard of love’s young dream

Beginning in a school canteen,

With soggy pizza smells and sound

Of rowdy teens fooling around?

No, fairytales just don’t ring true -

It took much more to fall for you.

Your sense of humor, all your jokes,

The way you smelled, the way you spoke,

The way our friendship grew with time,

The way your arm felt linked in mine,

And how you always shared your chips,

That dimple just beside your lips.

Your smile, the sparkle in your eye,

The way you never had to try

To cheer me up. When just the sight

Of you could brighten up my night.

The way you hold me when I’m sad,

The fact that you’re an awesome Dad,

The way our bodies intertwine,

The pride I feel that you are mine.

It’s so much more than simply fate,

That made me think that we’d be great.

I saw you on that day long gone,

I see you still.

You are my one.

The day we got engaged, 1999.
