Fading light

My grief is an ocean

Upon the soft bronze surface, various footprints remained, where grains so fine had been crushed. The night breeze flew across the sea, which went swimming over the parched sand. Trees were heard, rustling their leaves as the cool breeze touched them. Within this magical atmosphere, a sense of purity and noise united. The refreshing sea without boundary, beach so widespread - not easy finding a place more soothing than this beauty of nature.

From amongst the rocks, a lonesome figure emerged, dressed in funereal black. She slipped between the shadows in the growing darkness. The rich golden hues reflected and refracted onto the tumultuous ocean beneath. Broken shafts of gold shimmered and glimmered, dancing across the ripples of the sea. She considered its eternal beauty and wondered at its transience, so like she thought, life itself. Her love for him would last forever, although his life could not.

The turmoil of the crashing waves were as the thoughts inside her mind. The deep impenetrable blue of the sea was reflective of her eyes. The point of blurred distinction between horizon and sea was the point at which she felt herself to be. Her eyes glistened with salty tears. She was unable to sustain her composure any longer.

She propped herself up against a hard rock and found its warmth and pressure strangley comforting. She had loved the way his embrace had made her feel so cherised. She longed with an unbearable pain to be with him once more. And then the unthinkable thought surged as a tidal wave, flooding her senses and rationality...if she could not be with him in life...?

She glanced around her. The impending gloom of darkness of the oncoming night had slowly crept and surrounded her. Finally the sinking sun slipped beneath the ocean, as she did the same.

Words of a grieving teenager, who emerged from the ocean anew, forging the best life she could in honour of a loved one lost.

I must credit my good teacher Miss Smith for fine tuning this English assignment, and in turn inspiring me to take an interest in literature furthermore.

This is a beautifully written piece that captures the emotions of grief and the beauty of nature. The imagery is vivid and immersive, allowing the reader to feel as if they are there experiencing it all with the protagonist. The contrast between the eternal beauty of the sea and the transience of life is poignant and thought-provoking. The final line is particularly powerful, offering a glimmer of hope and resilience in the face of tragedy. It's wonderful to see how a teacher can inspire a student to take an interest in literature and unleash their creativity. Thank you for sharing this piece with us.
