Facing Possibility At a Certain Age

“The course of true love never did run smooth.” Shakespeare

By Katherine D. GrahamPublished 4 months ago 1 min read

At a certain age, sexual attraction takes on its own form.

It no longer holds the same blind urgency as a younger person’s norm.

If urges awaken between friends who are mentally, intimately connected

they can cause unease and release youthful fantasies, when least expected.

~

Logic knows that a friendship of many years is less likely to break

if there is a polite distance. Reserved behaviour puts less at stake.

Usually arm’s length contact, other than a kiss on the cheek,

shows respect to a friend, until a sexual curiosity is piqued.

~

In the flash of a moment, at the crossroads, desire meets reason.

The pull of attraction is questioned; it could result in self-treason.

Imagination flashes to what could happen when eyes lock--

culminating with the tensions being released – this creates a shock.

!

Thrown together with an elastic force, melding one into the other,

reality tests imagination and determines the limits of a bluffer.

Imagination holds excitement of longing, with exciting possibility.

Consummation offers fulfillment and risks emotional instability

~

Tension is a natural part of a toned, healthy, balanced stress.

Letting it become too tight, causes a snap, too loose leads to a mess.

If heated, plastic souls can forge, unite and be forever changed.

Union can improve flow or cause brittle cracks, leaving friends estranged.

~ ~

A respectful relationship is an integral part of a friendship’s structure.

The benefits of rapture must outweigh potential costs of a rupture.

A sexual tryst could destroy tensions that create a preferable tone

or help a precious friendship grow, with body, not just mind alone.

It's hard to say how a relationship will change with the complexities of intimacy. This is very insightful and poetic.

  • Omgggg, I sooo agree with this. You've conveyed a lot of truth here. Loved your poem!
