Everything That Scares Us

(on the darkness in us and our relation to the Divine)

.

We like to think we're something.

We live our little lies,

We build our walls to hide us from the truth...

We try in vain to save ourselves,

Not knowing all along

Our safety harness really is a noose.

.

And we're everything that scares us,

And we're everything we hate,

And we're everything that ever drags us down.

And the day we start to fight it

Is the day we seal our fate;

And flailing harder only helps us drown.

.

And we could rise above it all

If we would just look up

And grasp the hand that's been there all along.

And we could truly live our lives

Instead of just existing

If we could only sing a different song.

.

But we bite the hand that feeds us

And we kick against the goads;

We deify our flesh and bow to sin.

As we're cradled in His hand

We drive a nail in—even though

He's the only source of Life that's ever been.

.

And we're all a hollow shell,

And we're all an empty cup:

We exist just enough to be a void.

And if we would only ask Him,

He would come and fill us up

With something that can never be destroyed.

.

But the only way to have this

Is to give up on ourselves—

We must face the fact that we’re a total loss,

Stop trying to earn His grace,

Put down everything that’s ours,

And show up empty-handed at the Cross.
