Everything she tried to say came out wrong.

Take Me Into Your Arms

By Claire IbarraPublished 6 months ago 1 min read
Hesitation

Everything she tried to say came out wrong.

She said to him, look at the moon. Really she was thinking, don’t follow me.

She wanted to say no, but it came out, maybe. Yes for no, no for yes, it all comes out as maybe.

Sometimes while sleeping she forgets she has children. She takes inventory: names, ages, and locations so as not to lose solid ground.

She decided to tell him, I’m leaving. But instead, it came out as I’m sorry.

She meant to ask, is this the end of the world? Instead, she said, watch your step at the curb.

Tongue-tied, she imagined her lover and thought, take me into your arms, where I don’t have to speak.
