Beware Of The Cat

I walked into a store

a knock off, 7-11

There was green slime on the floor

and a room, built for confession

The walls painted black

and a few disco balls

As a matter of fact

there were no lights on at all

*

The guy running the counter

wore a shirt, with ET

When I began to move closer

he slyly nodded and winked

It was a strange encounter

he held up two fingers, like peace

mumbled, you're the first one this hour

the confession is free

I shrugged and said, why not

I've got things to get off my chest

He asked a lot about astronauts

then, zip-tied both of my wrists

*

I'm not gonna lie, I guess I kind of panicked,

I may have started to cry

He said, hey, calm down just a minute

I'm needing some answers, it'll all be alright

I felt numb, down to my digits

shielded my eyes, from the light

The lights flashed, and got dimmer

it smelled like burnt popcorn inside

When he asked me what I had for dinner

I said some corn and potpie

He said, if you tell me the truth

no one is going to die

I nervously gritted my teeth

and continued to cry

*

He asked me, what is the one thing

that you'd want me to see

Here on earth

that would really fascinate me

Any quirks that embodies

the uniqueness of earth?

We are eager to copy

the things that make this place work

*

It was then that I heard him, starting to snicker

I said, what are you laughin' at?

He said, I see you enjoy your liquor

and then, you take selfies, with Gizmo, your cat

****

I said, yeah, so, why is that funny?

he said, well, the cat thinks that your dumb

They don't like to be pet on their tummies

at least, not where I come from

And you're cat's one of us

he was sent here to spy

He said you were shady and sus

and that is the reason that I

Have found you today

so, tell me, is there anything else to confess

I sense you might have something to say

I said, you can't believe what I say, in duress

he smiled and said, very well...have a nice day

***

The next thing I knew

and I couldn't believe that -

I was at home in my room

with Gizmo there, in my lap

We both stared at each other

like strangers on the street

I said, Gizmo, my brother

tell me the truth, please -

I don't have any proof, I have to confess

they said you're here, undercover

he crawled up on my chest

and he started his motor

That soft, gentle purr, and I giggled and said

No...I didn't think so

and I pulled out my phone

To take a selfie with Gizmo

just the two of us, alone

*

The lights suddenly blew

and then, Gizmo was gone

I tried to deny what I knew

it was "them", all along

Very much like the Twilight Zone! I hope my cat isn't a spy ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Almost like an unexplained mystery episode. Got to be careful even in our dreams. Good work.

  • I thought it was porpoises, mice & the number 42. Now it's cats? My whole world just came crashing down.
