Eternal Rehearsal
An Ekphrastic Sonnet

Gustave Boulanger, "Theatrical Rehearsal in the House of an Ancient Roman Poet," 1855
Make art of the preparation of art
Turn a rehearsal to a performance
Of line and pigment make a living heart
Ignore grim time’s obstinate remonstrance

Echoes of ancient theater are here
Made living discourse by animate mouths;
Twice removed, by the painter’s brush drawn near
And Paris, replicating Rome’s dry south

Was drunk in turn by canvas’ greedy maw
Which digitized, delights a current eye
How many have seen what the painter saw?
So does human craft erosion defy

Representation, scourge of entropy
You give what was forgotten back to me
