The Return to Me

Away from the hustle of this infuriating city

Beyond the honking horns and screaming sirens

Cats in heat crying in high decibels outside my window

Dancing on the ledge, taunting their nine lives

Enticing me to dare to reach out to save one

Frustrated with the assault on my senses

Got to get away, got to escape, got find peace, got to

Hide awhile and find what is left of me

Inside, I know I am still there, waiting

Just waiting for a sign of the life that was

Kindness has all but left me buried in this place

Love is felt no more, not for humanity, not for me

My love of self-buried under years of bad decisions

Nothing left of the girl who used to be me

Open to adventure, to love, to kindness

Perhaps I can find her in another place

Quiet and pristine fields where hope can thrive

Rural farms with kind country folk

Smiling just because they woke up today

Today is a gift, not a day to be cursed

Ungrateful and uncaring is what I have become

Vivid memories of what I had left behind

What I escaped from to find my fortune

X marks the spot where I will return to me

Yes, fortune doesn’t matter if you lose you

Zest for life is what I crave and will find again

I must read through all your work. For the record, though, country folks are even more mean-spirited than city folk. They hide it better.
