Equality

a poem I wrote for english class during senior year

By 'Lissa StufflestreetPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

people are raised

to not

hate on others.

people are raised

to always

be themselves.

**

people are told

that love is love,

skin is just skin,

gender is just a word.

**

but people are

mistreated,

mistaken,

misused,

trash left at the curb

ready to be taken

out to the dump.

**

I remember,

as a child,

thinking how everyone

on this planet

were equal,

thinking about how

everyone on this planet

were the same.

now,

that I'm older,

and more experienced,

I can see all the negativity

this world has for those

who look or seem different

than everyone else.

**

as some say,

if you aren't white..

you aren't bright.

**

the world is blind;

blind to the truth,

blind to the facts.

the facts that are as such;

love is love,

skin is just skin,

people are people.

**

you and me,

together,

we are the same.

the exact same.

**

a person is just a person.

a poem is just a poem.

the next time your child asks you,

"what is equality?",

make sure your answer is

reality,

not expectation.

This was just a poem I wrote in senior year for class and recently found it deep in the memories of my old work.. so I figured what's the harm in sharing it amongst the world? I honestly don't know how good it is, but I feel as if the message behind this poem is still necessary to be shared around.. and it's better to be posted on here rather than get lost in my memories being shared with no one.

If you liked this, don't be afraid to check out the other stories/poems/articles over on my page.
