Epistolary Affairs

I don’t need to be your whole story. Just let me stay on the page.

Your emerald eyes caught mine

in between parentheses,

your fingers slipping through sentences

reaching for mine.

You never asked my name;

but I felt the whispered echo of it

in your phrases,

like a heartbeat wrapped in rhyme.

I dog-ear the memory of it,

already hungry for more.

Your inky breath pours hot

over my lips,

as I'm kissed with comprehension,

knowing another has seen,

felt,

touched,

a universe within a verb.

I hold the gemstone of each one

as a keepsake.

Your story leans into my skin,

like a page without margins.

They embrace me fully

in perfect double-lined space.

I could rest here in these stanzas

for hours, upon hours,

wrapped up in the soul of you.

To the one I found in footnotes -

Tuck me in between your covers,

like a bookmark,

so that I might continue to glimpse,

the truest love,

I have ever known.
