Loneliness perched on top of the lake,
legs dangling from his paddleboard,
dipping into the bottomless pool.
He stared into the depths,
the paddle held delicately in his hand.
Quiet water lapping at his feet,
the trees around him silent,
an eerie, empty peace.
Solitude.
Underneath the blanket of cold, little creatures swam.
Minnows rose to the surface
nibbling on the dead skin of his feet.
They went unnoticed, until it started to tickle.
Loneliness laughed,
the sudden giggled vibration forcing the fish to flee.
But he noticed the silver critters approaching again,
and the minnows continued their meal.
A smile quietly crept onto the boy's face.
How small, how quaint, how cute they are,
the little ones that swam around his toes,
oblivious to the monster above.
They found solace.
