Emotional Camouflage

Such am I

A fragile ego in camouflage

Appearances can be deceiving

I shrug off insults

But that is merely a mirage

Happy go, lucky friend

Always quick with jest

Laughter and a smile

But naked realism always dressed

Such am I

Your friend, your lover

Standing tall against all odds

Always protecting others

Never paying an emotional cost

But if you look behind the curtain

Of who I am and who I want you to see

You may catch a fleeting glimpse

Of the unexpected

Tender, fragile me

***

Such am I

Fragile and forlorn

Brought low by life’s injustice

By my own failures

By being lonely in a crowd

Not wanting to let others down

***

Such am I

Hiding behind a smile
