"The Monk by the Sea" painting by Caspar David Friedrich (1808-1810)
A godless servant on this earth
A stream of love that flows
Off a tiny warm mortal heart
Nature's kind gentle part
A man of word meditated by the mind
Philosopher of truth, through highs and lows
Holds it mute, for it is cold and wild
Cruel wisdom breeds no loving tribe
A secret monk in absurd disguise
Upon a mountain of thoughts, he knows
He has always fought, delusion and lies
For there is a whole universe behind his eyes
A vast space within a disturbed head
Reaching the soul's end, through windows
Becoming Zen, cold as old bread
Enlightened hearts are usually dead
