Echoes of a Fading Dream
A villanelle poem by Dean Hodsfry

Was I the dream you watched fade away?
Dreams we painted in twilight, left untouched and overdue.
Or was it you whose heart could not remain?
You wished for me beside you, night, and day.
I longed for more of us and sensed you did too.
Was I the dream you watched fade away?
We were scared but at what cost, friendship perse.
To show you who I would be, if only for you.
Or was it you whose heart could not remain?
The longer apart I felt my thoughts lead astray.
The bond we shaped unravelled, no longer holding true.
Was I the dream you watched fade away?
I wanted to show you each and every day.
To show you the person I could become for you, so true.
Or was it you whose heart could not remain?
Our lives drifted apart like ships in the bay.
If I had stayed, what story would we write anew?
Was I the dream you watched fade away?
Or was it you whose heart could not remain?
