Drowning

No one realizes how deep the water is until they start sinking.

By Mara WillemsPublished 8 years ago 1 min read

You saw something in me that wasn't there

I thought it wasn't fair

You tried to make others see it too

There was nothing you wouldn't do

I was a clear pool on a summer day

But you went out of your way

And you pointed out all of the dirt

Maybe you were hurt

But it was at the bottom of my deepest ends

You had to pretend

And others began seeing it

You didn't quit

Until they started leaving the water

I thought, "Not her."

No one wanted to swim anymore

So I sank to the floor

And hypocrisy is a tricky thing

And I wanted it to sting

Because I've seen all of the dirt on you

But I missed my cue

I just swam around it

I couldn't commit

Maybe you weren't seeing me after all

Or I couldn't hear you call

Maybe you saw your own reflection

And hated the complexion

But part of what happened next was my fault

Maybe by default

Because I didn't notice you fall in

I didn't care about how you've been

I didnt see that you started sinking

Shrinking

down

down

down

I'm sorry you were left to drown.
