dreams of light

light breaking water 3

By John CoxPublished 6 months ago Updated 6 months ago 1 min read
On Lake Attersee, detail, Gustav Klimt, 1900, Leopold Museum, Vienna, Austria

once upon a sunny afternoon a lifetime ago

we sat wordlessly on the shore of a mountain lake

our hearts beating with newly discovered love

your fingers closely entwined with mine

...

might such moments enjoy new life in shared memory

or dance invisibly when our eyes knowingly meet

even in our old age, our youth whispering

like the sun that once silently shone on those distant waters

...

our spirits joined in a dream of galloping light

our thoughts filled once more with longing

to impossibly skim atop the lake’s gleaming surface

the sunlight skipping playfully after

what is dream if not permission

to break the boundaries of tired flesh and bone

to fill the air with birdlike song

and feel the wind beneath imagined wings?

what is dream if not desire bursting from our breasts

to trade corporeality for incorporeality?

what is dream if not a loosing of heavy and burdensome flesh

a breaking of the bonds to this celestial sphere?

to whom might we bow to make it so

to what remembered watery deity or burning light high above?

to whom might we pray to feel that magic once more

the frost upon our brows melting away like spring snow?

...

imagine my love, that I am the lake and you are the sun

your light warming my shallows in the blustery summer wind

where brightly colored fish swim toward your welcoming rays

and dragonfly shadows dapple your reflected light upon my waves

...

can any of the happy moments we have felt together through the decades

eclipse the sun's shimmering reflection from that day long ago

when it began its slow descent toward the white capped horizon

and we basked in the warm glow of first love?

"might such moments enjoy new life in shared memory / or dance invisibly when our eyes knowingly meet / even in our old age, our youth whispering / like the sun that once silently shone on those distant waters".....lovely and so reminiscent of youth's glory. This poem is sheer perfection.

'imagine my love, that I am the lake and you are the sun' Who writes that??? You do that's who. This is amazingly beautiful because to me it is relatable. As a mature person who still feels young especially when I am with my wife. Days of our youth are not a distant memory they were mere moments.

AHH what a lovely start to a poetic narrative. Its so calming and vivid in its prose. It's beautiful when a love is so new that it grows in silence. Youth whispering, even in old age. Wow, beautiful 🤩 I quite enjoy the imagery of a galloping light. 'What is dream if not permission...' I am deeply speechless with this line. I like the heights you took when you thought about the wisdom behind why we sleep and it's connection to breaking the boundaries of tired flesh. 'Spring snow', a fine alliteration. The ending brought together nicely, the nostalgia of the love the two shared within and under the beauty of natures light and the waters that mirrors it all. Outstanding work, John 👌🏾👏🏾

  • Delightfully gentle and winsome. I especially liked: “our spirits joined in a dream of galloping light our thoughts filled once more with longing to impossibly skim atop the lake’s gleaming surface the sunlight skipping playfully after”💖

So beautiful, John! I loved your exploration of dreams and memory as being gateways beyond the limitations and declines of our physical bodies! So much tender love poured into this and it makes it such a radiant piece!

Truly Romantic! The use of nature in this was so redolent of those classic poets. I felt very calm and warm reading your words, John.
