Don’t You Dare Doubt Yourself

You are a valuable member of society

Human nature can be loving or spiteful

Kind or nasty and all points in between,

Remember everyone’s reality is unique

We have feelings, we’re not a machine.

***

We stroll through life in our own little world

A hop, skip and jump throughout the day,

A word of praise casually given or received

Or constructive criticism coming our way.

***

All a normal part of living and learning

Daily becoming a better version of you,

Stepping out of our usual comfort zones

Unravel our beliefs systems for a review.

***

It would not be abnormal to receive daily

Multiple loving compliments and praises,

From family, friends, offspring and employers

Until a bitchy, offensive comment betrays us.

***

Wham, we are painfully cut off at the knees

An unexpected unwarranted condemnation,

Leaving us floored and questioning ourself

Was that really a well deserved evaluation?

***

We can hear loving compliments all day

But that one bad judgement hits us hard,

Well I’m hear to tell you as often as needed

Don’t take it on board, please disregard.

***

Don’t you dare go back to doubting yourself

Incapacitated by feelings of guilt and anxiety,

Instead remind yourself of the love and praises

And know you’re a valuable member of society.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
