Don't Look

A brief poem about keeping to oneself.

Don't look at the ground.

That is where the dead things lie,

Failing against gravity for the final time.

.

Don't look at the ground.

The spidering cracks will open their arms

And swallow you whole.

.

Don't look up, not at the sky.

Not at the stars, the moon, the sun.

It is an impossible journey to get off the ground.

.

Don't look up.

The sky is no place for something without wings

That should keep its feet on the ground but...

.

Don't look ahead

When your feet struggle to carry you twenty steps.

The distance to the dream will make you bleed.

.

Don't look to the horizon.

It isn't a destination to reach for

When there is plenty to do cemented in place.

.

Close your eyes. Surrender.

But do not, whatever you do, think to look inside.

That world too isn't for you.

The only place we're not asked to 'not look' is behind where we can never go. It is a warning. Against what? Attacking fear from the outside in. So cool!

Ooh! This is exactly how it feels if you listen to what others say you should be feeling. Advice that includes "don't" very much feels like "don't tread where I don't dare to"
