someone once told me...

someone once told me i was dirt

and it wasn’t because i’m brown

oh they saw me as the ground

someone once told me i was dirt

and i didn’t make a sound

but that seed they planted inside of me grew into hurt

but you see... now i know

they were right

so i stopped putting up a fight

i am dirt

i am life itself

i’m where roots grow

i protect them until they’re courageous enough to show

i’m where water will flow

i nourish and prepare life for the sun’s luminous glow

i’m patient

but they called me slow

i’m the ultimate creator

insignificant to a shallow spectator

i’m a womb

they told me i was taking up space, but i’m making room...

for beauty to bloom

someone once told me i was dirt

and it wasn’t because i’m brown

oh they saw me as the ground

someone once told me i was dirt

and i didn’t make a sound

but that seed they planted inside of me grew into hurt

only now... i no longer frown

i am dirt

i’m all around

and if i’m sought after... i’m easily found

so when you see me... simply smile

and know that the hurt only lived inside of me for a little while
