Did you really need to
leave without a word,I
vanish like mist
before the morning stirred?
Did you really need to
turn the page so fast,
tear out the chapter
where we swore we’d last?
Did you really need to
unravel the thread,
cut it so clean
as if we’d never bled?
Did you really need to
close every door,
lock them so tight
like we were never before?
Did you really need to
let silence grow,
water the distance
and watch it overflow?
Did you really need to
forget my name,
rewrite the story
and set it to flame?
Did you really need to
leave me undone,
a sentence half-written,
a race never run?
Did you really need to
steal back the stars,
the ones that we wished on,
the ones that were ours?
Did you really need to
make ghosts of us two,
a love left to wander,
did you really need to?
Yet here I stand,
beneath a sky still wide,
watching the sun
paint gold where you hide.
And maybe you needed
to go, to be free,
but did you ever wonder
did you really need to leave me?
