It wasn't love at first sight.
When I first saw her, I hadn't driven her to the hospital
and prayed all night and day for her to come home.
It wasn't love at first sight.
When our eyes first locked, I hadn't cried on her shoulder
after hearing my mother's diagnosis.
It wasn't love at first sight.
When we first met, we hadn't been to funerals,
pinched pennies, and said vows.
It wasn't love at first sight.
Love came later. At first it was games—
two nerds rolling a pair of red dice.
