Destiny

Not to be Denied

By Linda BeaulieuPublished 4 years ago 4 min read

Want to go out my friend says? "C’mon, it’ll be fun!

Just a few drinks, maybe we will meet someone…”

Went just as I was, jeans and tee

Besides, the tee fits nice and it was really ME.

Once there, we were a group of not two but three,

Best friends, all single, feeling feminine and free..

Ordered a wine, planned to sip on it all night

When a group of men, no ladies, walked through the dim light.

One, handsome dark-haired guy with piercing eyes

Locked his gaze with mine, and I suppress sighs

El Diablo, a handsome devil, he seemed to be

Did he really look at me, or was it another of our three?

Tired of not being asked to dance, and no attention

We decided that our strategy needed new invention

Drinks in hand, we gave up the table and decided to stand

Besides, the tall bar had a better view of the band.

Suddenly, my dark-haired guy was staring again

This time it was definitely me, and I managed a grin.

He walked over, looking me over in a nice way

But, it was obvious my great boobs were the hit of the day.

As he got close, I made a decision to play into my assets

I grabbed my tee, which was about as fun as it gets,

Pulling the front forward between my two fingers at slow speed

I asked if I could make it easy for him to read.

It read “I’m tired of reality, I am looking for a great fantasy”

He liked that, and obviously, me …

Danced the rest of the night at the Saint and Sinners bar

By the time the band was done, I was willing to go way too far.

Thus began an emotional roller coaster of a relationship

Seems he was only there on a business trip….

And for that time, we lived every day, every moment

Neither of us could imagine the gift Destiny had sent.

Ways parted, lives unfolded and years went by

Twice, years apart and without a try

Destiny threw us together again, despite no contact

And no preplanned pact.

We were both travelling for our livelihood

His trips were planned for the company good…

I was a half gypsy, half salesperson, setting my own pace.

What are the odds our paths would cross in time and space?

One night I opened my door, and there he was, bigger than sin!

He had gone to a place where I might have been

He mentioned my name, and then Destiny stepped in

This perfect stranger to him happened to be my friend.

A nice visit we had, talked long and went to dine

But fate wasn’t ready to give us our time…

Again years passed by and life went on

Me, my way, and him on his own.

This strong, strange bond lingered between us

He would call me on my birthday and Christmas

At times I would be on the road, no phone around

Those times, he faithfully tracked my family down.

My Mom and my sister-in-law would let me know

They were always touched he cared so…

My sister-in-law even took his side

And advised me to give him a chance, before I died!''

Then he was sent to Hawaii, maybe for years.

He extended an offer, but I was engaged to a dear.

IF you ever, he said, the door will be open

Destiny again, not to be denied, awokened.

The dear I was engaged to had an intolerable trait

Promised, as always, to change, but it was too late

Engagement off, sadness and tears…

Took me months to get the courage and lose the fears.

Called this man who had been so loving and sweet

Long conversations, it was so hard not to meet…

Finally, he asked again if I would join him there

Half-way around the world, but I didn’t care.

Neither of us were youngsters and I yearned for him near

I flew off to meet him, with a some anxiety and yes, fear

Not knowing really how it would be…

Would it be the same between him and me?

Greeted at the gate with lei and a rose

So excited! God only knows!

Another rose on the seat of the car

Such a gentleman - so far….

The excitement of him, the loveliness of Hawai’I

And he was there, wanting to take care of me!

Another ten roses were in full beauty for me to enjoy

This one was a real man, not a boy or a toy.

My ticket was good for 30 days to return home

For all of those days, we explored and roamed

When the time came, “Was I going?”, he asked

I looked into his eyes, and answered “no” - fast!

That began an 11 year journey of living in Paradise

We explored the islands, and shared shave ice

Volcanos, luaus, playing tourist in Waikiki

I was there for him and he was there for me.

When the time was right, and we knew….

We decided that no longer should we be two

Married in a 1936 plantation house by the sea

By a true Kahuna, it was meant to be!

Time has passed, I am now 77, and he is 85

Thank God, both still alive!

We often reminisce about our love of near 30 years

Sometimes with laughter and sometimes with tears.

Retirement is a much slower pace, planning our days

Of doctor appointments and social security pays

Any adventures we manage now are done with gratitude

But all we do, we still do with attitude!

I always said that I wanted to grow old in a safe place

Sitting in my rocking chair, with a smile on my face

With everyone wondering why it was there…

My secret I can now tell, life gave me a wonderful partner - so rare.

Destiny, thank you, my friend!
