Depression While Studying Abroad
This poem is based on my experience studying abroad in Kyoto, Japan.
What is it like
To feel depressed
While studying abroad?
You should be out,
Exploring sacred places,
Trying local cuisine,
Meeting international friends for life.
Instead,
You are locked up,
On your laptop,
Watching youtube videos.
The culture shock I felt,
Left a sour taste,
In my very soul.
After studying abroad,
I realize I wasted,
10 months of my life,
Not doing what I should have done.
Why did I waste money,
On meaningless trinkets,
Instead of traveling to vast places?
I can’t ever make up,
The time I lost,
Doing nothing while in Japan.

Day 4 of Quitting
If this is how sobriety feels, maybe it’s better to go through life a little buzzed… this, along with other hits like, I want to kill myself, I wish I was dead, and I’m going to throw myself off a bridge have been the only thoughts on rotation these past few days. I promise myself that if, in a month, I still feel like this (‘this’ meaning despondent, full of rage, and simultaneously numb) I can go back to smoking. Until mid-February though? Nicotine is off the table.
