Defending Dulcinea

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
Marcel Duchamp, "Portrait (Dulcinea)," 1911

She walks along the avenue all day

Silent, determined and aloof is she

About her, gossips have too much to say

They speculate about who she must be:

"A widow, in grief's grey procession lost?"

"A prostitute, in search of sinful gain?"

"A mad pilgrim, counting toward Pentecost?"

"A flaneur fair, strolling her own domain?"

All stupid, salacious speculation

It swarms about her, powerless to sting

Thanks to Cervantes' imagination

This enigma in me a bell does ring

An angel's whispered prayer is thy name

Dulcinea, you put others to shame

Ekphrastic
