dedicated to the girl i call my everything

a love poem

By Scott HoughtonPublished 6 years ago 2 min read

This poem is dedicated to the girl I call my everything

When I tell you you’re my everything

I mean you’re constantly on my mind

You’re the last thing I think about before I fall asleep

And you’re the very first thing I think about when I wake up the following morning

Those early morning SnapChats are not just only to keep our streak alive

But also because you’re the only person I want to communicate with at 6 o'clock in the morning

And when I’m at work

And something weird or interesting, or funny happens to me

I look around to find you

Because I want to tell it to you what had just happened

But unfortunately we don’t work in the same place

So I write it down, as to not forget it

Because I want to share all parts of my life

With you

When I tell you you’re my everything

I mean you’re the person I admire most

As a teacher of children

You are not deterred by a random question from an over-eager student

And rather than ignoring the off-topic question

You go on a 15 minute tangent about solar radiation

Because you value discovery over schedules

And when preparing a lesson about explorers

You get nervous

because one of the explorers you want to teach about died in a hot air balloon explosion

And your hesitation does not come from the fact that you teach third graders

And “death by explosion” is slightly gruesome for 8 year olds

But because you don’t want to discourage any of you students

From potentially exploring the world in a hot air balloon

When I tell you you’re my everything

I mean you're the person who makes me laugh

Dumb jokes are my love language

And you are the dumb joke linguist of my heart

I can hear your jokes over and over again and I'll still laugh

Because I love them the most

You laugh at my jokes

Which is a big deal

Because I'm usually the only one who laughs

And it's the most beautiful sound you could ever hear

When I tell you you're my everything

I mean you're the person I trust most

You know things about me that no one else knows

Secret things

Special things

Things that Jarrett doesn't even know

And I know that doesn't mean anything to most of you in here

But it means a lot to her

You're the person in whom I confide

The person I tell my dreams and goals to

The person who doesn't judge me when I ramble about conspiracy theories

The person who in a trust fall

I would trust 10 out of 10 times

When I tell you you're my everything

I mean it.
