Dear Husband,
I have to say something.
Listen carefully.
You don’t have to gift me
golden jewelry,
no need to save
for an Alaskan cruise,
not even imported
flowers for Valentine’s Day,
no birthday treat needed,
not even expensive toys
for our kids.
Just listen carefully,
when I speak sense.
Like—
No chemical scents
in the house—
they’re carcinogens in guise.
No food preservatives.
You don’t want
holes in our guts.
Your job is to listen,
mindfully, my wisdom.
It is not to stifle
my choices and voice.
It is to support me,
not bring chaos.
In this conviction
lies your well-being.
Know it well.
