Dear Evangeline

I wont forget the day you came into the world

Kicking and screaming from your lungs

That you proved were so strong

Stronger than mine

Stronger than your mom’s

Stronger than your grandmother’s.

I held you to your mom as they zipped her closed

Like the seal on a Ziplock

And the tears streamed our faces

While you cried

While you slept

While you ate.

You slept in my arms

While your mother slept in her bed

And you freed yourself from your swaddle

To grab at your face

To grab at your blanket

To grab at my fingers.

I looked into your eyes for the first time

And you stared back at mine

I wanted nothing but to savor that moment

To look into your eyes

To show you that you were loved

To give you the whole world.

To my life

To my world

To my daughter

Evangeline.
