a recurring dream from my childhood

🧁

Chocolate cupcake

Berry pink frosting atop

One bite 'til it's gone

🧁

Cold air and bare feet

Second-story balcony

Voices down below

🧁

A slip of the hand

My cupcake skydives away

My mother looks up

🧁

An electric gasp

Chocolate splattered forehead

And she collapses

🧁

Back inside the house

In the sunroom, all of glass

The light is low now

🧁

Stained on window pane

A ghostly face has appeared

My mother gaping

🧁

No lesson is learned

Another cupcake outside

My mother's sister

🧁

My mother's mother

A line of matriarchy

The past is frosted

🧁

The sunroom scares me

Pane after pane is now etched

With shrieking faces

🧁
