Day of the dyke

A celebration of lesbians and poets everywhere

Next Saturday, April, twenty and six,

A date to remember, your diaries to fix.

Visibility day for all gay girls, all lesbians,

Daughters of Sappho, goddess of legends

Of love and of poetry, so please don't forget

To bless all the queer girls, for their epithet.

Lesbian day of visibility: April 26, 2025

Join the celebrations

As a little ad-hoc challenge, I am offering a $10 tip for any poem or verse of any kind that celebrates lesbian love, a well-known lesbian, an unknown lesbian, a lesbian from history, or any of our dear Vocal friends, or which otherwise honors lesbian visibility day/week. You could even write about The Poetess (Sappho) herself, or perhaps even take a fragment of her work and write your own Sapphic verse around it. If you are not sure how to find one, you could use "Love shook my heart..." as a starter. Just to make it even more fun, I will choose a winner entirely at random. So even if you don't think you can write poetry (1) you really can, and (2) literary merit is not a factor in this challenge. As long as your poem is, includes, or inspired by, a positive LGBTQ++ message, you are in with an equal chance to win. And with this challenge, the positive aura we can all generate makes everyone a winner. To enter, just link your Vocal poem (created at any point after this has been posted) in comments below.

Let's fight discrimination and hate with poetry and love

Language please: I have tried to use all terms and references to lesbians in a positive way, including some (such as 'dyke') that were used disparagingly in the past, and no doubt still are by some. If you are uncomfortable with anything I have said, please let me know and I will adjust if I can.

I think this is a wonderful idea, Raymond. Thank you for coming up with it. Have you been following L. C. Schaeffer. She just completed a 3-4 part series telling the little-known story of a young lesbian sent by her family to a convent to keep her away from her lover. Her lover, however, bested them by pretending to be a novitiate, rescuing her beloved & setting fire to the convent. It was quite the engrossing tale.
