Day of Rain

I do this a lot, I write a poem in one take. I don't set out to do this and it doesn't happen all the time. On this particular poem I had a hard time with the title. I'll let you read the poem and then give a explanation, it's somewhat humorous-the explanation-I'm Gerry Thibeault and I'm a poet.

Day of Rain  -by Gerry Thibeaul t

The size of white chickens, today

I get a text from my daughter,

There's a mouse in the toilet.

It was early and I was on my way in

to work driving down highway 10

when suddenly the wheel went flat.

The thought of being one day

never enters my mind anymore

like a penny maybe it was removed

from currency tarnished with rain.

---

I was on my way to work listening to The Poetry Space podcast episode 105 with Katie Dozier and Timothy Green when I receive a text from my daughter:

During the podcast there was a brief discussion on the poem The Red Wheel Barrow -by William Carlos Williams which prompted me to write my random poem above.

The Red Wheel Barrow -By William Carlos Williams

so much depends

upon

a red wheel

barrow

glazed with rain

water

beside the white

chickens

---

I didn't really get a flat tire that morning, but it was freezing rain outside. In Canada where I live several years ago the penny was removed from circulation and purchases' totals are rounded up or down-but who's counting.

Later that day the conversation with my wife and the topic deepened. My wife told me she couldn't believe our daughter texted her at 5am to tell her there's a mouse in the toilet and that she pee'd on it. I can a test it wasn't 5am, but none the less my wife was annoyed because she didn't have her coffee yet. She asked me how the mouse would get in there and I said, Maybe it fell out of her.
