Dancing with the memory of you

It's no use to think what ifs, but sometimes human nature makes us wonder even so...

Danielle, a name you don't use too often, but that stayed with me for all time,

Is it too much to ask your forgiveness, for realising too late who I am?

Sisters forever, siblings sometimes, maybe something else if I'd just not feared myself.

To linger in what might have been is not a practical thing,

Rich as our memories are, I'm sure we both had to go on our own paths,

And grow into being who we are, best friends forever, you a mother, me a wife...

Could I have loved you more, perhaps?

Time has passed into that forever we once talked about

In youthful whispers and teenage laugh, in those long emails and phone calls,

On painted paper when we wrote, cheering each other on and on and on,

Nothing can erase my memory of you, if that's of any benefit to you, or me, or us?
