Dance with me
Under stars of golden shine
Fill my evening with the wonder
Of a childhood lost to time
Sing to me of sweetness
Seduce me with your rhyme
Lull me to a world that
Only exists in the mind
Leave me to my dreaming
To this endless absent scene
Where life and death don't fight me
As I'm floating in between
A symphony of colour
Moving pictures left unseen
Then wake me with the sunrise
To a kiss of bitter caffeine
Hand me my last cigarette
And sit down next to me
Tell me what the morning shows
Tell me everything you see
Let the art of life overwhelm you
As you watch on silently
And love life back so purely
From this rusty balcony
Go and wake the kids up
Get them ready for the day
Murphy has his soccer game
And little Lily has ballet
Leave the house around noon
It's half an hour to Rose Bay
And Lily's dance class is in Redfern
You can drop her on the way
Feed the cats, and let out the dog
And kiss me before you leave
This winter's bite is cold and sharp
So wear something long sleeve
And while you're out, I'll sit here
In this world of make-believe
Retrieving little inspiration
Suffering stories unachieved
Message me when you get there
Though I likely won't reply
My art is calling me today
And the stakes are running high
But the sun is unkind to my canvas
And my paint is starting to dry
Yet divinity still evades me
And faulty art just won't get by
Grab dinner on the way home
And get me something too
My brain has turned for too long
And there's nothing I can do
But sit at this blank canvas
And hope for something new
As the chickets chirp for sunset
And the songbirds stop their coo
Don't talk to me when you get back
I've had a shitty day
If the kids try coming in here
Shoo them both away
I'm twitching in my fingers
And my hair is turning grey
When I stumble into bed tonight
Not a word you'll say
Just leave me to my dreaming
Let me toss and turn all night
My nightmares will not leave me
They put up the bigger fight
And if you wake up terrified
Do not turn on the light
Please, just cry in silence for once
I'm sure you'll be alright.
