Yesterday’s rainbow soft and high
Laughing as we ran for our white van to get out of the rain.
From the park to a quick meal and the peeling off of wet socks.
To bath time and a bedtime story.
The early morning breakfast rush,
Hunting backpacks, finding a blue hat, and where’s the red notebook?
At dinner, discovering the need for green treats, tomorrow.
To brushing teeth and a bedtime story.
School colors blue and yellow,
A gold trumpet, and a red ribbon.
Games needing oranges and concerts needing purple scarves.
Late night homework and quiet phone calls.
A rainbow pile of laundry
Laughingly dumped near the white machine.
Favorite meal eaten too quickly, before running out the door
To late night visiting and “don’t wait up”.
Black luggage loaded into the trunk.
Gray suit and toothbrush in a carry-on bag.
Brown jeans and sneakers rushing across the airport,
Late night texts glowing blue, “All is good, I’m here.”
Today’s rainbow, shimmering and far away.
Caught me walking in the rain, with just the birds.
A quick stop, to share a meal, and talk about the blooming pink trees.
Drive home to the quiet gray house.
