natures blanket covers you
in a pallet of autumn
gentle rain tapping on crisp leaves soften
the earth around you
-
in awe I stand by your side
while gusts sway the trees
confetti envelops the skies
peaking through the branches
bracing for the weight of something more
-
the worms make their way after the storm
grazing along the sodden leaves
that adorn your stone
a reminder you're not alone
when I'm not here
-
never obvious is the gradual change
before the biting cold and chapped lips
in between visits
the air turns sharp
-
I envy the warmth within my flesh
with every blink my eyes reset
refreshed and strained
but under the ice my bones don't tremor
-
the land grows dark too soon
and light again when the moon
brightens the night
where I can see
snow embellished your face
-
the cycle of life and death at your feet
it hurts to admit I feel at peace
standing by your side
knowing you're warmed by natures blanket
when I can no longer hold you
