Kings, queens, and hair

I been wearing the hair of a Queen for eighteen years.

Been degraded for it by one of my “kings.”

The dude who created me.

Y’all always wonder why nobody wants to be natural because even our own kind belittle and degraded us.

Only considered pretty or beautiful when we straighten our hair.

But any other time it’s like “when you doing something to your head?” or “why you walking around looking wild?”

My hair was always the thing I was most proud of. Can you imagine how hard it was to hear that day by day? Hoping, begging one day my hair would be good enough in the eyes of the beholder.

Can’t learn to love yourself when everyone always bringing you down.

It took my whole life for people to finally except their hair.

“Nappy” hair is great hair, it is the hair of the kings and queens, who would be ashamed that we’re ashamed of something so great.

Making our ancestors proud day by day even if it is with something just as simple as hair.

Don’t let nobody knock your crown down. Embrace it “nappy” is beautiful, don’t let nobody tell you otherwise.

I’m still standing strong even after eighteen years.
