Cremation

Cremation by. Patty Divya Difazio
Dressed in white, I walk along
Following my brother who can do no wrong.
The family and friends follow behind
No talking is heard; they’re being kind.
Showing respect for us and our Mom
As we silently march to the cremation ground
My beautiful mother, wrapped in a shroud
We gather around her creating a crowd
We mourn our mother, me and my brother
As we light the flame, we look at each other;
The light of the flame reflects in our eyes
It’s then that my brother stifles his cries
We place the flame upon the pyre
And watch the flames grow higher and higher.
We watch her body ravaged by fire
Her soul leaving quickly, is my desire.
The flames reduce her body so quick
As the fire gives that final lick
The priest chants mantras to release her soul
United with God is the goal.
As the flames die down to a pile of ash;
I see life as so temporary- just a dash
between birth date and death date
a life so full
That the final flames reduce to nill.
