Colors

And shadows

By Rayven HuffmanPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

Sometimes
The colors simply are not there anymore
The bright pinks of singing with my love in the car, and the yellows when we laugh when we are off key
The deep greens of listening to a thunderstorm raging outside my window
And the dusty purples of walking down a misty road, finding that the world around me has fallen into a deep slumber

Sometimes
Everything turns into a dull grey
It drifts in though the windows
And through the cracks under the door
It echoes a faint snicker
And I realize that it is here

Grey is the color that follows me home, and sneaks inside to follow me
It is already there to greet me as I fall onto my bed
And it lays down with me, providing unwanted and silent company
It pinches me right as I fall asleep
And when I finally do, it follows me into my dreams

Grey is there when I can no longer find the motivation to get up in the morning
It follows me as I open the refrigerator, and turn away empty handed
Grey is almost always there with me
But grey can be freighted away

Grey runs from the oranges that join me as I hunt for my paintbrushes
And hides when the yellows join me as I sit at my easel
Grey widens its eyes at the reds that surround me while I pick my favorite brush
And cowers at the greens that hover around while I prepare my paint
Grey shivers while the violets dance around me
And clamps clammy hands over its ears when the pinks begin to sing in harmony
Grey cannot believe its eyes when blue and indigo swirl around me
Dancing to the ethereal music
Grey dissipates completely
As it realizes that I am surrounded by a rainbow
