there’s a shade you only see

when you close your eyes

it's both an absence of light

and a response to the environment

you haven’t quite left

there are things about this world

no one has ever quite finished studying

shades and rays, hues and waves

parts of this planet deeper

than anyone will ever set their feet

and here, there are parts of me

that I can’t quite outline,

trace, or shadow

overnight I become a golden white,

become the morning light,

find myself a softer neon

when I call myself, I go straight to voicemail

she kindly asks me to consider

sending her a sign instead

so I leave her light scattered skies

and she calls them blue

rain beaten earth, and she paints it grey

I send her every flower but green,

and every fruit except an orange, and

when we fall asleep that night

it’s no one’s fault that we dream

in different languages

but our own

art
