I wish I knew this title to be true, or perhaps I wish it were that simple, but growing up my colors didn’t bring me Pride
Born in the Caribbean & the evolution of our colonial past: Indian, African & British, I am all three
So when you saw me as one and made a joke of the other (which is also me but maybe you don't see)
all your racist words about each other cut through me
Now this maturing woman has come to realize, The reconciliation being asked for outside is the work that must be done on the Inside
To free me from colonizer/enslaved, master/servant, to let go of the inner critic that whips me incessantly.
My goal now is to Love all these Parts...they are also me
In a world that hasn’t learned to love All of its colors, I now allow them to be Free
You can’t teach me to hate, because Love & acceptance will always bring Pride, I walk that path now inspired & in Stride
With those among us that have the truest eyes to see
That the true color challenge is to no longer judge another or feel Super or Inferiority
I am here now, determined to love you and me.
