Cocoa

a poem

I fill the kettle and flip the switch,

open the cupboard, browse my collection of mugs —

the hedgehog broke today, slipped right out of my hands, shattering on the rug —

so I settle on the flamingo, slipping my fingers around its neck to pull it down.

The water boils as I rip open paper packaging,

pour the cocoa powder in, water, stir.

I spray a cover of whipped cream, swirl chocolate syrup across the top,

a casual reminder that I deserve small, nice things

even if no one else can see them, especially if no one else can see them,

and I can make these comforts for myself.

Oh I adore this poem. I love how impactful the simplicity is. How you made beauty out of a seemingly ordinary task. The self care really shines through this poem in such a gentle but inspiring way. I especially admired the second last line.
