Coats
Each of us
Have a number of false selves
Brave fronts we’ve fashioned
Shields of protection
That enable us to function
Interact
Encounter
The hours
On the timeline of our lives
We put them on
And take them off
Like coats
“Isn’t that lying,” you ask?
Not entirely
For each coat contains
Fragments
Of truth
Elemental building blocks
Of our authentic selves
I saw my coats
Disheveled
In a heap upon the floor
And decided
It
Was
Time
Ripping them apart
At the seams
Gathering bits of truth
From each
I stitched them together
With silver soul thread
A beautiful mosaic
My coat of many colors
Then slipping it on
I vowed
To never take it off
After all
In this life
I have to do something
To be someone
I might as well be
Me
