Coat Check

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
"Le Thérapeute [The Healer]" (1962) - René Magritte

A vacant variable; a cloaked void

Coat, hat and cane framing empty, blue sky

You might be worried, a bit paranoid

Relax—do not this power deny

If ambulatory nothing is here

Prepared to assess your strange condition

Why would you pretend that it’s not severe?

Be honest with this strange apparition

Understand that the costume is what counts

The esoteric language and weird tools

The glossy capsules in precise amounts

Calibrated to sedate frightened fools

Look closely at the void in the healer

Confess your need to be a believer

Ekphrastic

What an intriguing poem. I often find pictures to head my poems or stories and rewrite my pieces to weave certain aspects found in those pictures within my stories. I really enjoyed this creative poem.

  • This was sooo beautifully crafted! Loved your poem!
