There is coal in them yonder Welsh valleys
It lies deep down in the dark, underground
There’s been a sadness in them yonder valleys
There’s been a lot of hardship Around
Men work deep down under Greenfield's
In darkness they look for coal day and night
There have been disasters in them yonder valleys
Far beyond imagination or anyone’s control
I have lived there you see in the valleys
My late husband of miner, his age thirty-three
We were only wed for three years
When it all ended, as every mining wife fears
There was silence then and tears in the valley
100 good men, all died there below ground
Many tears flowed in our little green valley
Frightening silence, like a blanket all around
An explosion then after damp halted the rescue
sadness as no one came out alive,
Rescue workers still went helping and looking
The mayhem and carnage deep down below
Its 60 years since all of that happened
I have kept the memory to this day
I no longer live in the valleys
when my husband died I moved far away
I will always remember how happy we where there
Whenever he went deep down the coal mine
How relaxed and happy he was that horrible morning
When you said goodbye love, I will see you in a bit
I’m now over 90, in my mind my memory of that day still alive.
I still have love for the valleys, and my man that they took away

I've been writing poetry since the age of fourteen. With pen in hand, I wander through realms unseen. The pen holds power; ink reveals hidden thoughts. A poet may speak truth or weave a tale. You decide. Let pen and ink capture your mind❤️
